Salzburg, Austria

After a whirlwind two days in Salzburg, we’re now on a train to Krakow, via Vienna. The weather has been humid and warm for the past couple of days so we’ve been consuming vast quantities of water, soft drink and ice cream. This is definitely the way to deal with cold miserable rainy [...]

Werfen, Austria

We connected again with our Austrian friends in Werfen today. As we had headed down to Wolfsberg and back up to Werfen via Moosheim, they had driven across from Vienna.
Our bed for the night was in Pension Weisses Rossl with a very friendly host named Doris. The pension had a view of the [...]

Grossglockner, Austria

In the Great Depression, someone came up with a plan.  Not just a small plan.  A marvelous plan.  A plan to build a road for one person to visit in ~70-80 years time.  Well done, good people of Austria!  That’s some excellent foresight!
We spent absolutely fantastic hours with brilliant weather driving the the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse [...]

The other side of the road

Ah, the joys of driving on the other side of the road…
After a couple of hours being numbed by the incredibly dull Austrian highway system (possible motto: “we like to put up high fences to hide any view of Austria”), we finally arrived at Wolfsberg in the southern part of the country.  As we pulled [...]

What did we do before GPS assistance?

We hired a car from Europcar Vienna and when we booked it, decided not to book a GPS device to assist with navigation since we had intended to purchase the Austrian map for the GPS in our mobile phone. Since we can use GPS without the need for an active SIM card, it seemed the [...]

Optional underwear

At Donauinselfest 2010 a beach volleyball competition was taking place between some teenagers just mucking about - it didn’t seem to be a competition for prizes.  One of the girls was wearing a dress which ended above her knees but was not particularly revealing.  It also had an open neck but again, nothing particularly revealing [...]

Donauinselfest 2010

We were fortunate enough to accidentally arrive in Vienna on the first night of Donauinselfest.  This apparently translates roughly to “Danube Island Festival”, although other possible translations are:

“Everyone, Including Minors, Drink Volumes Of Alcohol In A Public Area”
“How Many People Can We Fit Onto One Bridge?”
“Seriously, That Band Still Exists? You’re Kidding Me!”

Our friends, Wolfgang [...]

When “no” means “more”

I am currently sitting in Heathrow airport, wondering about the life expectancy of the little darling child near me who is clambering all over the seats and has found a delightful game called “throw your steel Matchbox model London bus all over the airport”.  His mother is just sitting there saying “no”, “no”, “miguel, no”, [...]

Alnwick Castle, Newcastle

The conference dinner for the 4th International Plagiarism Conference was at Alnwick Castle.   The food was a BBQ but was pretty dry fare, appearing to have been cooked several hours prior to the meal.  Trying to cut through a dry steak with a butter knife is always a challenge.
The Alnwick Gardens are very attractive [...]

Melbourne - Newcastle

After about 700 hours travelling, we’ve finally made it to Newcastle in the UK. Our flights were variable experiences.
Melbourne to Hong Kong: We had initially hoped to buy exit row seats before we travelled but were unable to do so. We then decided it was worth upgrading through frequent flyer points, but that [...]
