The unstoppable tram
April 12, 2005 2:58 pmAt the end of a long working day, I escaped out the door just before 7pm and walked over to the tram stop to catch a ride home. As the only person at the stop, I assumed I was the only silly bunny working late and sat down to await the arrival of a tram.
After some time, a tram turned the distant corner and came trundling up to my stop. By this stage I had walked out onto the road and was preparing to board the tram. The tram slowed down to a crawl - a sure sign it was about to stop and open the doors. All the traffic following the tram came to the mandatory they must do behind the tram to let passengers on and off.
So you can imagine my surprise when, as I stood 3 feet from the doors, the tram accelerated and took off into the distance…
Apparently the gene pool for tram drivers is so shallow that this driver actually forgot to stop and open the doors. Somewhat stunned by this sudden turn of events which left me in a lane full of traffic with the right of way over pedestrians, I was too busy scuttling off the road to write down the number of the tram.
Not daunted however I rang the telephone number on my ticket to lodge some rather irate customer feedback. The lass who answered the call was only to happy to oblige. ‘’Ah,” she replied. ‘’You want the number for Yarra trams feedback. I’ll transfer you straight through.” And with that, I was suddenly listening to the recording for the V/Line feedback call centre instead.
Evidently not content with irritating me once, I ended up with two public transport employees battling it out for the SPOTD award…
